As the popularity of vaping continues to increase, innovation in the performance of vaping devices seems to have moved in lockstep with it, affording e-cigarette enthusiasts more flexibility in how they choose to enjoy their vaping experience. Vapers are famous for engaging in the practice known as “modding” (meaning “modifying”), which is the process of tinkering with the various components of a vaping device in order to improve some aspect of its performance. One of the most popular mods to emerge in recent months is the temperature control box mod, which is basically a box-shaped encasing that houses an e-cigarette, and that contains a small chip that controls the temperature of the wire coils in the atomizer of a vaping device. This sets a limit on how hot they can get, and is designed to be a “fail-safe” so that the coils never heat up to dangerously high levels.
A common problem among vaping devices is when a wick dries out too quickly, which causes the temperature of the coils to increase, and many times leads to a burned wick. This can give the vapor a very unpleasant taste, and can increase the risk of heating the vaping liquid to unsafe levels. Studies have shown that when vaping liquid–whether PG (propylene glycol) or VG (vegetable glycerin)–is heated to high temperatures, it actually breaks down at a molecular level, and can release dangerous formaldehyde molecules, which is obviously a health risk to humans. Keep in mind that these formaldehyde molecules are completely harmless as long as they are bound to the other molecules in the vaping liquid, but once they have broken away from the other molecules through high temperatures, they can be a health hazard. The temperature control box mod alleviates this problem by providing a type of “kill switch” that prevents the temperature of the coils from getting too hot, thus reducing the health risks of vaping (which are already much lower than smoking) by a significant degree.
